Review By Anna Strickland

When I first heard this album, I thought it was decent. It was catchy and the vocalist had a great voice. It made for a good Indie-Pop album. The more I listened to it during my workouts, my walks to campus and my long drives home, I couldn’t stop playing The Mazloom Empire. The vocals are so good, blending perfectly with the melody and singing the truth of every girl into the mic. Being a woman, I relate to the lyrics and I feel the emotions of the words, as any woman who has ever been in a relationship can. “Crystal Chandelier” is my favorite, adequately describing how neglected and lonely a girl can feel when with the wrong guy.

The Mazloom Empire has crawled into my brain and won’t evacuate. Their sound is not my typical choice. I played “Crystal Chandelier” for a friend and he said, “this really isn’t your style…I think you’re going soft.” I listen to faster-tempo music and I like rock more than pop. However, when I stopped and really listened to the lyrics, I realized how deep these songs are. They are not your typical catchy, meaningless pop songs. They’ve got depth and a message that any person who’s dealt with heartbreak can understand. “Burn” is the angry break-up song that every girl looks for when she’s pissed off and needs an outlet. The album comes full circle when it comes to the emotions of a relationship, and that’s what makes it such a fantastic work. The lead singer, Lawdan Mazloom, speaks for a lot of girls out there with her songwriting, and for that, we thank you.

I will say that for a lighter melody, the band manages to infuse an edgy vibe into each of their songs. “Take Me” has a heavy element, which is created by the guitar/drums combo. It makes me wanna dance.

The album left me wanting more, as it only includes five songs. I definitely hope the future holds many more cathartic and beautiful pieces from this five-person outfit. The band has just begun to dip their feet in the music biz, so I can only expect great things to come. Give them a listen, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
